Carl Byington, a professional engineer and owner of PHM Design LLC in Ellijay GA, is one of only about 500 people in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents. In this latest installment, he shares some of his experience on traveling to Zimbabwe in December of 2013, his seventh and final successful world marathon after he nearly died in a rock climbing fall a few years before.
Byington wasn’t sure he’d finish the last marathon in Zimbabwe in 2013. He went bungee jumping a few days before and tore muscles around his ribs, which caused pain when breathing. He was also almost attacked by a baboon, and experienced gastric distress from the water.
“I had a bit of trouble finishing, but I did,” he said. “I just kept thinking, ‘No. 7.’”
